HUGGY BEARS DAYS 2022 at WUK

Huggy Bears Premiere 2022

Since 2016 our Huggy Bears Mentoring Program has stood for innovative performance art by emerging Viennese artists. As a mentoring program, it offers three to four individuals or collectives each year a comprehensive range of support from production to administration, technical and dramaturgy. Through a series of different performance formats as well as regular group feedback sessions, the emerging artists’ projects take shape into very special pieces. At the end of the nine-month program, the mentees present their performance project for the first time on a major Viennese stage, the WUK.

This time Sara-Lisa Bals, Verena Herterich, Max Oravin and Maggessi/Morusiewicz have been working towards the performance dates in October 2022 at WUK. The artists have gone beyond their disciplinary boundaries, engaged in critical feedback at showings, including at brut Wien, and try outs, and have always received constructive support in the Huggy Bears group.

Through this process, three very different projects emerged, each nevertheless absorbing the traces of the others. Touched by the mutual exchange, this year’s Huggy Bears Days are to be understood as a festival. It is about storytelling itself, how it emerges from sometimes visible and sometimes invisible interconnections. All participants came with their own ideas, which were formed into pieces through hard work. But it is only through contact with each other that they have become what will be on view at the WUK in October 2022.

Maggessi/Morusiewicz: Wormhole Stories

“Wormhole Stories” is a multimedia performance by Maggessi/Morusiewicz, who present a slew of stories of draining frustration and of never-ending pleasure, inspired by films and their own daydreaming(s). Some of the stories originate within various wormholes, while some others resemble wormholes through their spiral shapes, or they evoke wormholes through the use of light, sound, and material objects.

verena herterich & Oravin: Unravellings

Starting from the symbiotic intertwining of body and sound, verena herterich & Oravin explore touch, texture and situatedness. In a dynamic system of relations, spaces unfold in the space. Just as sound is broken down into its smallest individual parts through granular synthesis, time, space, body and narrative potential are repeatedly unraveled into their fibers and constantly rewoven.
